INSTRUCTIONS FOR MILITARY ACADEMY NOMINATION

Instructions for Military academy nomination

Eligibility

The following eligibility requirements must be met by each applicant as of July 1 of the year of admission to the service academy.

  • Age: Must be between the ages of 17 and 23 years old
  • Citizenship: Must be a United States citizen
  • Marital Status: Unmarried, not pregnant and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents

Process for Service Academy Nominations

Open an applicant file

Open an applicant file with your service academy of choice. Request Pre-Candidate
Questionnaire from the Admissions Office of the applicable Academy.

  4. United States Merchant Marine Academy – (516) 726-5646, apply online at https://www.usmma.edu/admissions

Complete SAT or ACT testing

You may submit a copy of the score from the testing website. 

Schedule a Physical Aptitude Exam & Medical Exam as Required by the Academies

Complete a nomination packet for Congresswoman Schrier’s office


To complete this nominations packet, please submit the following by October 31, 2024.

  1. Completed nomination application
  2. Official high school transcript
  3. College Board Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and/or American College Testing Program (ACT) results
    • SAT results can be sent to my office using the code: 4161
    • ACT results can be sent to my office using the code: 7745
    • (Test website score print outs are acceptable)
  4. Resume of professional and/or extracurricular activities
  5. Current photograph
  6. Completed essay. The essay should address the questions below.
    • Why do you want to attend a service academy?
    • Why do you think you will be an exceptional addition to the United States Military?
    • What does public service mean to you, and how specifically have you demonstrated a dedication to service to your country in your life?
    • Please note that all essays must follow the writing conventions outlined here:
      • Times New Roman font
      • Double-spaced
      • 12-point font size
      • 1-inch margins throughout
      • 0.5” tabs at the beginning of paragraphs
      • Applicant’s name must be on each page in the upper right-hand or left-hand header
  7. Letters of recommendation
    • Please submit three (3) letters of recommendation, at least one of which must be from an academic instructor or teacher.

Transcripts and letters of recommendation may be sent separately from the source to this email if needed.

If there are extenuating circumstances which merit special attention, please contact my office for guidance. 

Complete Academy-specific applications

Complete all forms and return to academy or academies by their deadline. Note: a Congressional nomination is not an appointment to the academy. If nominated, you will be placed among a select group of nominees, and the academy will make the final decision. 

Participate in an interview

If invited, participate in a required interview with Congresswoman Schrier’s Service Academy Nominations board.
