Sauk-Suiattle Indian Tribe Natural Resources Facility Upgrades
Sauk-Suiattle Indian Tribe Natural Resources Facility Upgrades - Darrington, WA - 5318 Chief Brown Lane, Darrington, WA 98241
Amount Requested: $300,000
The funding would be used for the renovation of the Tribe’s main fish and game processing facility to create a clean, safe, indoor facility to process food products and ultimately reduce spoilage and contamination. This facility would include additional office and storage space, freezer unit equipment, a watercraft shed, a new drain trench, and a fish waste composting pond alongside other related equipment and facility updates. This project is an appropriate use of taxpayer funds because it would improve the Sauk-Suiattle Tribe's ability to provide food to its members through the combined efforts of the Natural Resources Department, Health and Social Services Department, and Elders Food Program. These efforts include salmon processing services, meat and fish storage, office space for natural resources management, and the protection and security of watercrafts owned by the Tribe.
Additionally, the current fish processing area is outside and uses catch totes filled with ice and stored outdoors. This work area is in the sun and under an area that wasps frequent. A clean, indoor, and expanded space with watercraft storage would uplift community development, ensure the Tribe can provide food to its members, and support the culturally important and economically critical fishing and game processing abilities of the Tribe.
