Pierce County Sheriff's Office Safety Equipment

Pierce County Sheriff's Office Safety Equipment - Pierce County, WA - 930 Tacoma Ave South, Tacoma, WA 98402

Amount Requested: $257,000

The funding would be used for the purchase of critical first aid and traffic equipment, including 65 portable Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), Naloxone kits, individual first aid kits, and traffic lidar and radar tracking equipment. This equipment would be placed in patrol cars to ensure that officers are able to administer life-saving measures immediately. The project is an appropriate use of taxpayer funds because the Pierce County Sheriff's Office serves the over 960,000 residents of Pierce County and faces a variety of rural and urban demands. Deputies are often the first to arrive in response to emergency calls from residents and frequently need tools to respond to life-threatening situations.

Additionally, the Pierce County Council and Pierce County Executive Mello have worked to create a Vision Zero Action Plan to achieve zero traffic deaths and serious injuries on County-owned roadways by 2035. A major part of the implementation includes the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office and their ability to deter speeding using current technologies, like radar and lidar. Improving and increasing the Sheriff’s Office radar and lidar equipment would assist in both the implementation of the Vision Zero Action Plan and responding to specific traffic complaints called in by constituents living in areas located in the Eighth Congressional District.
