Rep. Schrier’s Statement on House Passage of Legislation Suspending Energy Imports from Russia

March 9, 2022

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Kim Schrier, M.D. (WA-08) released the following statement after the House approved legislation that will ban energy imports from Russia with strong support from both sides of the aisle:

“Today the House passed legislation that will ban Russian oil imports with near unanimous support. This action is another step to ensure Putin faces the harshest possible consequences for his unprovoked war in Ukraine.

While we take this step, we must also ease the strain of high oil and gas prices Americans are already experiencing here at home. That’s why I introduced the Gas Prices Relief Act to suspend the federal gas tax and provide immediate relief to families. And at this moment of high prices and global uncertainty and shortages, we need to increase domestic energy production, so we are less reliant on foreign oil. We can manage two ideas in our head at the same time: increasing production to meet today’s demands, while also planning and making the proper investments towards a clean energy future. Energy independence includes a full portfolio of energy sources and brings long-term security. In the short term, we need relief for families now.”
