Rep. Schrier’s Bill Reauthorizing Funding for Review of Safe Animal Drugs Passes in the House

July 17, 2023

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S Representative Kim Schrier’s (D-WA) bill the Animal Drug and Animal Generic Drug User Fee Amendments of 2023 (ADUFA) has passed in the House. This bipartisan piece of legislation passed out of committee unanimously and is exactly the type of no-nonsense legislation that both parties can get behind.

The Animal Drug and Animal Generic Drug User Fee Amendments of 2023 (ADUFA), reauthorizes the FDA Animal Drug User Fee Act for the following five years, building on successes from the previous user fee agreements. This legislation will:

  • Preserve the security of our nation’s food supply by ensuring the medications administered to food-producing animals are safe for animal and human health.
  • Provide increased funding for the review of new animal drugs and new generic animal drugs.
  • Accelerate the development of animal therapeutics and promotes a more predictable and streamlined review process.
  • Hold the FDA accountable to performance goals that will enhance inspection times and provide regulatory certainty for innovators and pet owners alike.
  • Advance innovation in veterinary medicine, securing the best care for our nation’s veterinary patients.

The Animal Drug and Animal Generic Drug User Fee Amendments of 2023 play a vital role in safeguarding our nation’s food supply by ensuring the safety of our food-producing animals and protecting both human and animal health,” said Rep Schrier. “This legislation passed out of committee unanimously and highlights the potential for non-controversial bills to garner bipartisan support in Congress. I was pleased to see this bill pass the House unanimously. This is a huge win for Eighth District farmers, ranchers, and dairymen who rely on FDA-approved medications to keep their animals healthy, not just for their responsibility and affection for these animals but also for food production and their economic survival. I am committed to working with both parties to bring down the temperature and bring home legislation that farmers and constituents with companion or farm animals all need.”
