Rep. Schrier Supports House Infrastructure Bill That Includes Bipartisan Legacy Roads and Trails Act and $19 Million for 8th District Projects

July 1, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Representative Kim Schrier, M.D. (WA-08) voted to pass the INVEST in America Act, a sweeping infrastructure bill that includes $19 million for transportation projects in the 8th Congressional District and Rep. Schrier's bill to provide funding to the Legacy Roads and Trails Program.

"I was proud to pass the INVEST in America Act and secure funding for three important local projects," said Rep. Schrier. "As our country recovers from the coronavirus pandemic, this bill will help get people back to work and invest in a resilient 21st century infrastructure. Local leaders know their communities' needs best. That's why I worked with mayors, county commissioners, and community members across our district to identify priorities like the three local projects and funding for the pragmatic Legacy Roads and Trails program."

The following WA-08 surface transportation projects were included in the INVEST in America Act:

  • $8.6 million for the Columbia River Pedestrian Bridge Extension & Apple Capital Loop Trail in Wenatchee—this is in addition to the $92.4 million INFRA grant announced last week
  • $4.5 million for the Lea Hill Corridor 112th Ave SE & 105th Pl SE Intersection Improvements in Auburn
  • $6 million for the HWY 162 Pedestrian Bridge in Orting

The INVEST in America Act also included Rep. Schrier's bipartisan bill, the Legacy Roads and Trails (LRT) Act that leverages public and private funding to address our national backlog of deteriorating infrastructure, while protecting American rivers and streams, endangered fish, and community water systems. Targeted projects restore fish passage and access to upstream habitat for salmon and steelhead, maintain and stormproof forest roads, and improve trails so people can safely recreate on our public lands. This is Rep. Schrier's 15th bill to pass the House, 10 of which have been signed into law.

The INVEST in America Act funds surface transportation and water programs, improves safety, and invests in climate resilient infrastructure. The INVEST in America Act offers a new approach to federal infrastructure policy by emphasizing fixing our existing roads and bridges as well as investing in passenger rail, public transit, cycling and walking infrastructure, zero-emission options, and drinking water and wastewater infrastructure to invest in American communities and tackle the climate crisis.

Strong Buy America provisions and labor protections ensure that the work will be fueled by American workers and manufacturing, creating jobs with targeted investments in rural and underserved communities.

The INVEST in America Act now awaits Senate passage to become law. The Senate and President Biden are currently working on similar infrastructure proposals.
