Rep. Schrier Statement on Border Supplemental Funding Bill

June 26, 2019

Rep. Kim Schrier, M.D. (WA-08) released the following statement after voting for the $4.5 billion supplemental funding bill to help with care for children being held at the border:

"There is no question that we need comprehensive immigration reform. Yet at this moment, there are children at the border in unsafe conditions without access to adequate food, and the agency in charge is about to run out of money. That is our immediate priority and is why we need to act quickly to authorize these additional funds. Children should not be pawns in the immigration discussion. As a pediatrician, I will continue to demand accountability for how children are being treated. We can and must do better."

Earlier this month, Rep. Schrier wrote letters to the Office of Inspectors General of the Department of Homeland Security, and Health and Human Services demanding answers about recent reports of children being held in vans for extended periods of time and having their life-saving medicine confiscated and not replaced.
