Rep. Schrier Celebrates Inclusion of $500M For Howard Hanson Dam in President Biden’s Proposed Budget
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Yesterday, President Biden released his proposed budget, which included $500 million for the Howard Hanson Dam fish passage facility project. Representative Kim Schrier, M.D. (D-WA) has previously championed and secured funding for this project.
In 2022, Representative Schrier led the Washington delegation in sending a letter urging for funds from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to go towards the Howard Hanson Dam fish passage facility. Congresswoman Schrier was then able to secure $220 million in federal infrastructure funding for the long-needed downstream fish passage at the Howard Hanson Dam.
"Since entering Congress, I've advocated for crucial investments in the Howard Hanson Dam that benefit both our community and strengthen our environment. That's why I led a Washington delegation letter urging funding for the downstream fish passage at the Howard Hanson Dam and was proud to secure $220M for that project," said Rep. Schrier. "Yesterday's announcement that $500 million of additional funding is included in the President's budget builds off of the work we've put in for years. This funding will go towards construction for a critical project in Pierce County that will help get clean drinking water to the community, help recover our vital salmon populations, protect the region from flooding, and close the loop that has opened hundreds of miles of pristine spawning habitat for salmon. This project stands to do more for endangered salmon restoration than any other project to date.”
