WENATCHEE — U.S. Rep. Kim Schrier of Washington’s 8th District stopped by the NCWLIFE studios this week to talk about wildfire suppression, federal earmarks, the Jan. 6 insurrection, and a host of other topics. High on the list for the Sammamish-based congressmember and pediatrician: The National Prescribed Fire Act of 2021, which funds and mandates prescribed burning and forest thinning on federal lands.

“We haven’t let any natural burns happen for over 100 years,” she says, “so (the forests) are crowded, there’s underbrush, which just makes for an incredibly hot, destructive fire.”

Schrier’s congressional district is the only one that crosses the Cascades, and includes Chelan County and East Wenatchee. She spent part of Memorial Day weekend attending veterans’ events and other public gatherings in Chelan, Manson, Wenatchee and the Lake Wenatchee area.
