Appreciation for Schrier's efforts on tariffs
We as orchardists feel that the Lake Chelan region is the premium apple-growing region in the world. However, because of the unique climate, topography, and water also make our area a very desirable place to live.
We have to grow and deliver an outstanding product to receive a premium price to withstand the non-agricultural pressures and to walk away with any profit.
Unfortunately, the areas that are willing to pay the needed premium are too often offshore markets that are currently tariff-restricted countries.
India was Washington's number two export market just a few years ago and went from exporting around $120 million worth of apples to India in 2018 to just $3 million in 2022. My orchards market deliveries decreased by 99% in just the last year.
Through Representative Schrier’s bipartisan efforts, however, one very important tariff in India has been lifted, and that market has reopened. Our sales staff report a dramatic increase in preorders and inquiries once the retaliatory tariffs placed on the United States by India were announced.
We very much appreciate her help and attention to this "small" detail. We hope this will be the beginning of an open market in not just India but other countries as well. Our district is an expansive one, and it's noticed that Rep. Schrier has been advocating for these tariffs to come down since she first took office.
