Maple Valley Pedestrian Bridge

Maple Valley Pedestrian Bridge - Maple Valley, WA - 22017 SE Wax Rd, Ste 100, Maple Valley, WA 98038

Amount Requested: $2,000,000

The funding would be used for the construction of a pedestrian bridge on SR 169 to connect residents, businesses, and visitors to local schools, bus stops, trails, parks, downtown businesses, and regional destinations. The project would reconnect neighborhoods, provide a safe pedestrian and bicycle route, and include an ADA compliant path. This project is an appropriate use of taxpayer funds because in 2018, a pedestrian was killed attempting to cross the highway after exiting a bus stop. Many residents attempt to cross the highway on foot to access the Maple Valley Farmers Market and surrounding businesses, schools, and offices. This project would eliminate the safety risk of crossing the highway by providing a safe option for people walking, biking, and riding transit buses. This is especially important for school-age children at Rock Creek Elementary School adjacent to the bridge. The lifespan for a pedestrian bridge is estimated at fifty to one hundred years, which provides assurance that these safety measures would be long-lasting and serve the surrounding community for generations.
