King County Rapid DNA System

King County Sheriff's Office
516 Third Avenue, W-116
Seattle, WA 98104

Amount Requested: $811,260

The requested amount of $811,260 will be used by the King County Sheriff’s Office to purchase a Rapid DNA System and the Sheriff's office will invite local partner law enforcement agencies to participate. The funds will purchase the Rapid Instrument and required hardware, software & materials for the system. This is a good use of taxpayer funds because it will allow better access to process DNA for agencies in our region as opposed to using the crime lab which has a lengthy backlog for most cases and, at times, will not accept a property crime case for processing. This technology has been developed and approved under FBI guidance to process DNA within 90 minutes. Law enforcement agencies across the country have started using Rapid DNA to make quick and accurate identifications that will drastically improve public safety and save time and resources, catch more criminals and exonerate those wrongly-accused. Furthermore, this project will follow the guidelines provided in the Department of Justice (FBI) published “NonCODIS Rapid DNA Considerations and Best Practices for Law Enforcement Use.”

Federal Nexus: The project has a Federal nexus because the funding provided is for purposes authorized by Section 501 of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 (34 U.S.C. § 10152).
